POWER 4 Youth
provides academic mentoring to at-risk middle and high school youth in Long
Beach, Lakewood and Fullerton communities.

Established in 1999, POWER 4 Youth
has become one of the largest mentoring program the communities it serves.
|
 |
There is no cost for the student
to become involved with POWER 4 Youth.
|
 |
POWER 4 Youth mentors and students meet weekly for 1½ hours. Pairs meet at
regularly set times and days each week at the church site.

Although founded by the
Presbyterian Church, it is not a church program: There is no religious
affiliation requirement, evangelical focus or proselytizing component. The
program is available to all students.

More than 215 young adults have
been involved in POWER 4 Youth since its inception.

 |
80% of the students who remain in
the program for the entire school year improve their GPAs.
|
 |
Currently, forty five students are
benefiting from the program. The ethnic make-up of the students reflects the
larger population: 52% Hispanic, 28% White and 14% Black and 6% Asian.
Likewise, the adult volunteers come from varied professions, backgrounds and
ethnicities.

In 2006-7 program year, 39
youth experienced the positive impact of a mentor through POWER 4 Youth.

90% of
the youth show improvement in reading through participating in POWER 4 Youth.
|
 |
Over
150 adults have had their lives
changed through their relationship with a student in POWER 4 Youth. |
