For Students

Do you need help with math, reading or some
other subject? Or do you just need someone to talk to? POWER 4 Youth is
here for you. POWER 4 Youth is an academic mentoring program for middle
and high school students from throughout the Long Beach, Lakewood and Fullerton
communities. POWER 4 Youth
matches youth with volunteer adult mentors who help with homework, skills and
self-development. Through POWER 4 Youth you will
also develop strong relationships with your peers and adults, some of which will
continue on long after you complete the program.
POWER 4 Youth is for all boys and girls age 12 to 17
from the local neighborhoods. Students who wish to be matched with a mentor are
first asked to talk with staff, read over the materials, and complete an
application and parent permission slip. POWER 4 Youth mentors
and students meet weekly for 1½ hours. Pairs meet at regularly set times and
days each week at the church site. Also, there may be phone calls during the
week. Adults and students who participate in the program commit to the
school year. If a student joins after school has begun, she or he commits to
complete through that school year (through July).
In
addition to your weekly meetings, POWER 4 Youth offers events and social outings
through the year such as trips to museums, baseball games,
hockey games, and more. This gives students additional opportunities to
spend time with their mentors and fellow students developing positive
relationships in supervised but fun settings.
